Here is a rough running list of what I’ve learned during my second year of “Search“. Maybe I’ll clean this list up, maybe I won’t. What I’d like to do is expand on these bullet points over time.
- which tools are good
- which tool are a waste of time
- who is worth listening to
- how much one little thing can screw up top rankings
- the need for paying attention to detail
- its all about project management and developing a systematic approach for all aspects. Each aspect of your strategy needs to be consistent
- time management is crucial
- how to waste time (I can waste time like nobody’s business)
- why seo is like martial arts (basics building upon basics)
- Corporate SEO vs. Entrepreneurial SEO - two very different worlds
- one tries to leverage total number of clients against a simple strategy, while the other will leverage a complete strategy against fewer clients
- You have to give to receive
- Even though “content is king”, it’s not the trump card. User Experience (UX) and brand name are crucial
- SEO vs. EGO. “who the hell are you to tell me how do develop a strategy?”
- There is always someone smarter than you. Most times, there many people smarter than you
- There is no “silver bullet”. You must balance the equation
- There is no need to try to “beat the algo, you just need to beat your competition
- In the SEO world, transparency is important. Developing content, developing your strategy, don’t be self serving because it shows, etc… it’s all there for the world to see
- analytics, analytics, analytics
